Our Purpose

GJ's Coffeehouse is a monthly ministry of Northwest Community Friends Church. We're a small (but growing) church with a big heart for ministry, and GJ's is one of the ways that we serve the Tucson community.

GJ's has a three-fold purpose:

1)  We provide a relaxed, non-threatening, fun Christian place for young people to hear great Christian music - all for just $2 at the door.  We feature southern Arizona's best Christian bands - everything from hip-hop to punk to acoustic!  The styles of music vary, but the bands' goals are the same: Praise and worship of our Lord, edification and encouragement of believers, and proclaiming the Good News to those who are seeking the Truth.

2) Along with the music, GJ's is a whole lot of FUN and GAMES!  Where else can you listen to live music while playing games (everything from ping-pong to board games), scribbling on the table-cloths, or just lounging around on a comfy couch?  We even have an "Open Mic" time each month, when you, the audience members, can become performers - sharing songs and original poems with the rest of us!  In between the fun and games and music, be sure you stop by the kitchen to buy a steamy hot cappuccino, or an ice cold frappuccino, or maybe an italian ice drink (and don't forget to buy some cookies or other goodies).

3)  GJ's is a great opportunity for teamwork and cooperation between all of those involved in making the coffeehouse a reality each month. There are all kinds of behind-the-scenes responsibilities: kitchen-work, publicity, sound, door, cleanup - but it all starts with transforming our  church sanctuary into a Coffeehouse a few days before the big night - and then back to "church sanctuary" by Sunday morning!

In case you were wondering:

Q  Whose idea was GJ's, anyway?

A  Thanks go to former youth pastor Willis Loftin (and wife Isabell), who led a successful coffeehouse ministry in their former church in Indiana.

Q  Who or what is GJ? What does it stand for?

A  It's a mystery - one of those wonderful mysteries connected with GJ's - not unlike the question, "What's the deal with the penguin?"

No one knows what or who GJ is, and we don't have a clue where the penguin came from. He just appeared suddenly, as penguins often do.
